Molmax 1950s Chocolate Brown Leather Kelly Bag with Single Strap Front Clasp and Inner Compartments
Established around 1930, Molmax was a leather-goods factory in Westbahnstrasse 26, Vienna, Germany, making luggage and sports equipment and employing over a hundred staff throughout the 1930s.
Renowned for producing top quality goods, the name and trademark of the firm was ‘Molmax’ and the handsome logo was designed by Max Moldau himself.
Molmax Vienna submitted a few examples of their work to the Paris World exhibition in 1932 and were awarded a grand prix and a Medaille d`Argent, however with the outbreak of WWII, Moldau and his family had to escape the Nazis, after which their factory was appropriated for military use.
Only two containers of personal items were shipped to England, whereupon Molmax successfully reestablished itself as a manufacturer of fine leather-goods, sports goods, luggage, hand-bags (especially the shoulder bags, designed by Gretl Moldau for the women’s services during the war) in Grays Inn Road, London, with customers including Aspreys of Bond Street, and Harrods.
The firm continued to trade both nationally and internationally until its closure in 1986.
This particular piece dates from the 1950s and is a chocolate brown single strap leather ‘Kelly’ style bag with a front clasp, two inner compartments including a zipped vanity and gold tone hardware.
