Anne Tyrrell for John Marks 1970s Tiered Gypsy Frill Dress
History
Graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1960, Anne Tyrrell MBE enjoyed decades of success both as a fashion and interior designer and as visiting professor and Honorary Fellow at the Royal College of Art, London.
Having understudied as a pattern cutter, the launch of her own label ‘Anne Tyrrell at John Marks’ in the mid 1960s was a instant hit with international fashion fairs such as the Pret-A-Porter in Paris, and soon became a brand leader in the international dress and evening wear fields of Europe, USA, Canada and the United Kingdom.
After winning the ‘Womenswear Designer of the Year Award’ in 1980, Anne later established her London-based design consultancy named ‘Anne Tyrrell Design’, equipped with an in-house team of highly qualified designers and former Art College undergraduates.
The consultancy went on to provide a worldwide service to the textile, fashion and lifestyle industry through companies such as Next Retail, British Rail, Nike, IWS, View From, House of Fraser, The Orient Express, JCB, The Limited, Cotswold Collections, Virgin, Royal Ascot, John Lewis, Mitsubishi Corporation, Bamford & Sons, London Underground and many more besides.
In 2001, Anne was elected as Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, before being awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2008, while in 2013, the Norwich University of Art awarded Anne an alumna of NUA, along with an Honorary Doctorate for services to the British Fashion Industry.
At the 2014 Graduate Fashion Week Awards, Anne also received ‘The Lifetime Achievement Award’ from Hilary Alexandra, in recognition of her contribution to UK fashion and design over 50 years.
Description
This adorable vivid floral day dress by Anne Tyrrell for John Marks is now making a grand entrance, after more than 40 years of storage.
Only ever appraised in private viewings at the Tyrrell home, and sampled by none other than Joan Collins, the dress offers super-vivid pinks, greens, yellows and berry of the flower print, which ‘pop’ brilliantly against the ivory background.
As a very rare find and part of a much larger collection from the Anne Tyrrell estate, the skirting is fully lined in a substantial satin fabric, whereas the balloon sleeves and gypsy style bodice are made from semi-sheer cotton.
This beautiful garment is an exceptional representation of British fashion history, as well as being a truly extraordinary frock.
