Anne Tyrrell for John Marks 1970s Tiered Gypsy Frill Dress
Graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1960, Anne Tyrrell MBE enjoyed decades of success both as a fashion and interior designer and as visiting professor and Honorary Fellow at the Royal College of Art, London.
With the launch of her own label ‘Anne Tyrrell at John Marks’ in the mid 1960s, Anne’s clothing range was a hit with international fashion fairs such as the Pret-A-Porter in Paris, and soon became a brand leader in the international dress and evening wear field within Europe, USA, Canada and the United Kingdom.
Having won the ‘Womenswear Designer of the Year Award’ in 1980, Anne later established her London-based design consultancy named ‘Anne Tyrrell Design’, equipped with an in-house team of highly qualified designers and former Art College undergraduates, while the consultancy itself provided a worldwide service to the textile, fashion and lifestyle industry through companies such as Next Retail, British Rail, Nike, IWS, View From, House of Fraser, The Orient Express, JCB, The Limited, Cotswold Collections, Virgin, Royal Ascot, John Lewis, Mitsubishi Corporation, Bamford & Sons, and London Underground and many more.
In 2001, Anne was elected as Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, before being awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2008, while in 2013, the Norwich University of Art awarded Anne an alumna of NUA, along with an Honorary Doctorate for services to the British Fashion Industry.
At the 2014 Graduate Fashion Week Awards, Anne also received ‘The Lifetime Achievement Award’ from Hilary Alexandra, in recognition of her contribution to UK fashion and design over 50 years.
This 1970s John Marks dress is glorious with its perfect drop waist, gypsy-inspired ruffles and a racy plunging décolletage, which collectively make for an alluring bohemian look. As first-class designers, their collaboration undoubtedly produced a ‘hot’ vintage garment, right down to the heavily ruffled plunging collar, saucily deep-cut waist and the ruffled tiered skirt, and as an added bonus this wonderful piece is also hand washable.
