Jean Muir 1980s Black Scoop Neck Short Sleeve Classic Viscose Tunic
History
A master needleworker at the tender age of six, Jean Elizabeth Muir CBE made her entrance into high fashion through the doors of Liberty & Co., working her way from the stockroom floor to lead Jaeger designer for their ‘Young Jaeger’s’ clothing range in 1956.
Having parted company to pursue her artistic ambitions, Jean was privately funded so as to establish her debut label named ‘Jane & Jane’ in 1962, going on to win three ‘Dress of the Year’ awards over the next fifteen years, while Jean almost always utilised Liberty fabrics when creating her trademark dresses and was successful in bringing a touch of class to an otherwise fast-moving mass market.
With her husband as business partner, Jean Muir Ltd was founded in summer of 1966, and from there on it was a procession of simple, refined and almost restrained pieces finished in sensual fabrics, with emphasis on the powerful imagery of the feminine form, and while known for uniform colour palettes of dark browns and blacks, Jean was equally at home with occasional pastel shades, striving almost obsessively to achieve a look and feel beyond compare.
Jean Muir continued to design and produce for her loyal clientele until her death in 1995, after which the company fell into the creative hands of her loyal senior design team, who worked tirelessly to preserve the reputation of the brand until in 2007, Jean Muir Ltd closed its doors for the last time.
Known admirers and devout advocates of her clothes and vision include Joanna Lumley, Lauren Bacall, Dame Judi Dench, Julie Walters and Charlotte Rampling to name but a few, and there is no question that her determined singularity left a lasting impression on the world of both couture and fashion, while a select number of her original pieces are now showcased in Bath fashion museum for generations of designers to study and likely emulate as the industry continues to evolve.
