Horrockses Fashions 1960s Wool Tweed Cadmium Coat
First established in 1791, Horrockses was a brand extension of Horrockses Crewdson & Company Ltd, a global cotton producer situated in the north of England, while in 1946 ‘Horrockses Fashions’ was launched on a premise of low cost ready to wear coats, dresses, beach wear and children’s clothing.
Having garnered the affections of royalty and celebrities alike, the brand continued to flourish through its numerous overseas fashion shows and costume designs for leading cinematic films, actresses such as Joan Collins and Vivien Leigh, as well as tour wardrobes for The Duchess of Kent, Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, later leading to their Royal Warrant in 1960.
Sadly the label’s popularity wanted throughout the 1970s and 1980s and so in 1983, Horrockses Fashions closed its doors, until 2016, which signalled their reentry into high street fashion through a new collection and brand image.
A classically versatile British duster coat with a beautiful tweed Mod cut, this type of outer garment was also known as a ‘Box’ or ‘Polo’ style coat. Loosely cut, with a taper towards the knee, this is a classic single breasted coat with large resin buttons, while the fabric print in simply divine, with a cadmium orange and airforce blue medallion print and a contrasting high stand brown velvet collar. As a knee-length coat this is a meticulous, and yet style-casual, representation of the British Mod movement.
