Clobber for Jeff Banks 1970s Chocolate Brown Panne Velvet Coat
History
Welsh born Jeffrey Tatham-Banks CBE, was somewhat pushed into the fashion industry, when as a young boy, his mother was unable to pay for his school uniform. This frustration tapped into Jeff’s latent entrepreneurial abilities, as he raised the money through the purchase and resale of paraffin for a modest profit.
Enrolling at London’s Camberwell School of Art, Jeff quickly moved from painting to textiles, before finishing his education at New York’s Parsons, The New School for Design, where he studied fashion. Using the money made from the sale of his paraffin-transport business and significant financial assistance from his parents, Jeff opened his first boutique ‘Clobber’ in Blackheath, London in 1964.
With the likes of John Lennon, George Harrison of The Beatles, Terence Stamp and model Jean Shrimpton frequenting the store, it became an overnight success, later leading to Jeff’s eponymous ‘Jeff Banks’ fashion label creation in 1969, found in over twenty-two departments stores including Harrods and Harvey Nichols.
Co-founding fashion chain ‘Warehouse’ in 1976, Jeff won ‘British Designer of the Year’ in 1981, a few years before launching the hugely popular ‘Clothes Show’ for the BBC in autumn of 1986. After this came the creation of ‘Incorporatewear’, a clothing production company designed to provide bespoke corporate uniforms that flatter the clients brand identity, regardless of employee numbers or location.
Today, Jeff continues to work as freelance designer and enjoys global recognition whilst living through his mantra of ‘be yourself, enjoy the moment of dressing up and don’t try to be someone you’re not.’
