Christian Dior 1980s Noir sur Noir Velvet Wool Silk Jersey Dyad Wrap Style Midi Dress
Born early 1905 to wealthy parents, Christian Dior was a child that wanted for little and yet yearned for so much.
Having been groomed to become a French diplomat, Christian shunned the world of politics in lieu of a career in art, eventually opening his first gallery in 1928, before losing it through the rigours of the great depression and a series of family deaths.
Employed by fashion designer Robert Piguet, Christian cut his teeth through the design of three collections, quickly learning the value and aesthetic effect of simplicity within clothing styles and fabrics.
Continuing to design throughout WWII, Christian opened his eponymous Paris fashion house in 1946, showcasing dazzling new cuts and an exuberant use of materials, initially frowned upon by the clamouring public, but eventually embraced with gusto as his pieces consistently surprised and overwhelmed.
Sadly, Christian died in the autumn of 1957 for reasons as yet unclear, however the general consensus is that he choked on a fish bone whilst suffering a heart attack on holiday in Italy.
This is a simple yet incredibly elegant dress, the fabric used is absolutely exquisite, comprising a dense, yet soft, wool jersey fabric, with a contrasting silk black velvet wrap. This piece is unlined, making it perfect for warmer evenings while offering a wonderfully classic wrap style.
With bishop sleeves, slightly gathered at the shoulder with a singular fabric covered matching button to each tapered wrist, the main body of the dress wraps the figure while skimming the bust and revealing just enough skin to retain an air of elegant mystery.
The skirting itself follows the same wrap line, again free and open while allowing a bare leg to peek though with each and every step, amounting to a garment that will leave only appreciative reactions wherever its worn.
