Anne Tyrrell for John Marks | Late 1970s Black Silver Party Frock and Jacket | UK 10/12
Graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1960, Anne Tyrrell MBE enjoyed decades of success both as a fashion and interior designer and as visiting professor and Honorary Fellow at the Royal College of Art, London.
Having understudied as a pattern cutter, the launch of her own label ‘Anne Tyrrell at John Marks’ in the mid 1960s was a instant hit with international fashion fairs such as the Pret-A-Porter in Paris, and soon became a brand leader in the international dress and evening wear fields of Europe, USA, Canada and the United Kingdom.
After winning the ‘Womenswear Designer of the Year Award’ in 1980, Anne later established her London-based design consultancy named ‘Anne Tyrrell Design’, equipped with an in-house team of highly qualified designers and former Art College undergraduates.
The consultancy went on to provide a worldwide service to the textile, fashion and lifestyle industry through companies such as Next Retail, British Rail, Nike, IWS, View From, House of Fraser, The Orient Express, JCB, The Limited, Cotswold Collections, Virgin, Royal Ascot, John Lewis, Mitsubishi Corporation, Bamford & Sons, London Underground and many more besides.
In 2001, Anne was elected as Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, before being awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2008, while in 2013, the Norwich University of Art awarded Anne an alumna of NUA, along with an Honorary Doctorate for services to the British Fashion Industry.
At the 2014 Graduate Fashion Week Awards, Anne also received ‘The Lifetime Achievement Award’ from Hilary Alexandra, in recognition of her contribution to UK fashion and design over 50 years.
Bring on the party!!!! What a striking frock & jacket ensemble from the late and so very great Anne Tyrrell. This set absolutely screams Studio 54! Black and silver metallic fabric appearance, a classic cut bustier dress with frill hem line and the most waist cinching cropped jacket to throw over your shoulder once the party has ended… A singularly arresting ensemble to wow at any event.
As seen here on page 17 of the Cambridge Varsity ‘Winter City Chic’ pages……
This beautiful set is part of a large collection of Anne Tyrrell’s Estate which have been preserved, unseen, since the late 1970s. A truly rare and collectable find. See here for more information.
