“I have an aversion to the tailored thing. I think what women want to wear in the daytime is beautiful knits – as many as possible…We are almost a family here. Everyone’s a craftsman, we are all on the same wavelength. That shows in the clothes…” Bill Gibb

‘Bill Gibb seems to dress most of the bets-known women in the world…Anouk Aimée, Eartha Kitt, Twiggy – “She was always very definite about what she wanted. She used to love to dress up. Now it’s jeans – that’s the Malibu effect” … Claire Bloom, Bianca Jagger – “She tries everything on again and again, inspects every stitch, takes things apart, finally chooses something and then, when she’s got to go to New York or wherever, sends for the rest” …Marisa Berenson, the Empress of Iran, Elizabeth Taylor – “You’ll go up to her suite with armfuls of dresses…It’ll be a big social scene, she’ll try everything on and keep talking. She knows exactly what fits with her image. I saw her recently wearing my white Qiana top back to front – but she wears something with such confidence that no-one else would have guessed.”

“A collection is three months solid great. Picking the fabrics, making two hundred rough sketches and boiling them down to fifty or sixty, then turning them into reality. Sitting in front of a blank sheet of paper is one of the most frightening things I know. I’m living in a modern flat now, not so cosy as the Portobello Road where I was for six years. Everywhere I move I take four things with me – two chemist chests, a 1930′s porcelain head, and my collection of bees. Ever since Ernestine Carter noticed a few bees in my country collection and said ‘Bee for Bill’ people have been giving me bees. Now in every collection I feel obliged to put in a bee for a signature.”
