Vintage Editorials: Dames Never Lose…
“Use those cannons if ya hafta” snarled Gloves. In the quiet street, the only other sound was the prying click of a passing street-photographer. “Keep us covered”, ordered Russalka, posing with Gloves for a last-minute picture.
Back in the hideout, Gloves had taken his gloves off. “So we’ve wised up the boys,” he said, keeping his voice low. “Your mouth’s too wide, Gloves,” she said.
“Didja hear that?” Gloves hissed. Russalka stiffened in her burnt orange pure new wool suit. “Aw, it’s just that goddam camera again,” she rapped.
“Plush joint,” Gloves breather. “This dame sure ain’t short of jack.” Nonchalantly, Russalka slipped her hand into the pocket of her ice-blue dress-and-jacket in pure new wool twill. “Oh, yeah?” she sneered. “It’s just a six-bed shack with frills.”
“Thanks for the ice, Lady,” Gloves growled. “Sunday a card on ya birthday.” In the silent room, a shutter clicked. “Okay,” Russulka snapped; “let’s cut the mug-shots and beat it.”
“Home, Michael,” she purred. “And step on it.”
“Nice,” Gloves grinned. “Real nice. I always liked a shot of sea air. Smart move to switch routes, baby.” In her Shetland sweater of pure new wool, Russalka smiled and said nothing.
For Russalka, the end of the trail was in sight. She spun round to face the gang, her Luger spitting fire. Mick was the first to fold.
For a moment, she stood framed in her pure new wool coat-and-dress. From the Moth’s cockpit, Hans looked on. “Climb aboard, baby,” he barked.
