Good Read: Cambridge Strawberry Fair…

Well…. I finally made it back to ‘The Strawberry Fair’ in Cambridge for the first time in 5 long years. We moved away from my home town several years ago and lived on the Welsh borders for a time – which was a life changing experience and I am sure at some point I’ll fill you in on the details of that adventure. But for today – we are chatting Strawberry’s, Fields, Food and tradition.

I first visited the fair when I was the same age as my youngest daughter Cassidy – 3years 2months. I distinctly remember having a mini-afro, wearing a paisley halter-neck and shorts, having my face painted, and playing on what I thought was a huge pirate ship, but it was probably a 14ft wooden play ship – my sister has a picture of me hanging from one of the masts – I must retrieve that and share it as a Facebook Flash Back Friday!

On our way……Little Cassidy with her farmers hat…..

The reason it has taken me such a long time to get back to a somewhat Family (and City) Tradition of attending the Strawberry Fair, is simply due to the fact of now having a little family of my own to tend to. My eldest daughter Neave was diagnosed with Microcephaly secondary deletion at 18 months, and then followed with Developmental Delay, Dyspraxia and learning difficulties,  which essentially means that she is a special little bucket of love. Due to Neave’s sensory issues, difficulty walking long distances without falling several times and other contributing factors, as a family, although we do have outings and holiday’s – lots of super charged planning and organisation is involved in every trip that we make and most of the trips we take are cut short due to exhaustion (for Neave as well as all involved in her care) or general overloading of sensory stimulus etc…

When Cassidy came along, five years after our first bundle of love, this too caused a little delay in jumping back on ‘The Strawberry Fair’ bandwagon so to speak. It is a fine event to be enjoyed by all the family, but for personal reasons I just don’t feel that I could feel completely comfortable taking a baby or young toddler to any event for a long period of time.

Bootiful….Everyone was just setting up, we had obviously turned up way to early – but hey …that is what happens when you become a parent – turning up to events at 9:30 or 10am is the norm….we actually didn’t get there until 11:30!

Cambridge folk…Relaxing…

Our recent ‘come back’ only lasted an hour – but it was well worth it and helped me to touch base with a few forgotten memories and re-live (to some ultra-mini extent) a little bit of the ‘The Strawberry Fair’ Vibe. Neave was visiting with a helper/carer at the Zoo, which meant that we could take Cassidy out for a little jaunt to the fair. We wandered, we gandered, we fed and watered and then we left a little heavier due to the veggie burgers, hot-dogs and Jamaican Jerk Chicken and Rice n Peas we all enjoyed!

One of the Radio Stages at the event – there were also a couple of other stages preparing sound checks for the upcoming bands….Had to show this image just to capture the camper van parked next to the stage…one of my dream must have vehicles when I was a teen!

Sadly we didn’t get to see or hear any live music as we had arrived way too early – however, we only live a short walk from The Fair and so could hear most of what was going on, on our journey home……Better luck next year eh!

What is the Strawberry Fair?

What is Strawberry Fair….
From humble beginnings, Strawberry Fair has grown to be the most popular free, entirely volunteer run, one day music & arts event in Cambridge (and probably across Europe!), attracting over 30,000 visitors throughout the day. On the first Saturday of June and now past our 40th year, residents and visitors have gathered together on Midsummer Common to celebrate their vibrant and creative city.’

Homeward bound…..The sun really did shine on The Strawberry Fair this year….

For some reason this song always resonates with me when it comes to the general ‘feeling’ of The Strawberry Fair’. I absolutely love this Track by America – A Horse With No Name

Enjoy…We did xxNxx
